The purpose of the Creative Writing class at FSU was designated to teach students about contemporary poetry. This type of poetry is very different from the types of poetry taught in high school. They are very focused on free verse writing, with very informal language. The class connects the different things you learn by showing the different uses of figurative language and poetic devices in different contemporary poems. Different devices such as line breaks, imagery, and tone are all used in these poems in different ways. This class was not significantly important to my major in Biology. Although, I do not plan on doing anything poetry related in the future, I do enjoy it as a hobby and as an art. This class has definitely shaped how I see modern poetry as well.
My performance in class was above average in my opinion. I felt like many of my essays and poems were very well thought out and made. My time management throughout the semester was not bad either. Although, at times I had trouble with keeping up with some of the blogs and drafts I did well to finish them on time. My participation in class was also above average. I felt like I did good to not only show my opinions in class, but to also help others expand their poems and essays. I felt like I could have done better at helping revise others essays. I had a hard time trying to find ways for the people whose essays I graded to expand their thoughts. I’m not sure if it was because the people whose essays I revised were very smart and already had their thoughts well organized, or because I was not looking hard enough. Other than that, I felt confident when telling others how to fix their works. The in-class revisions and revisions with Ms. Goch were very helpful. Many times through the semester, I had trouble reaching the length requirements for essays as well as making sure my essay made sense. The people who revised my essay were very helpful at helping me expand my essay; however, Ms. Goch was very good at helping me organize my thoughts, not only into ways that others would understand, but in ways that would help keep my mind and essay on track.
This semester has definitely helped me with understanding how MLA formatting works. All the citing I had to do this semester has definitely helped as well. During high school, I did not understand what teachers were looking for in the essay regarding citing. I only thought they wanted to see a bibliography and that was it. I have also learned exactly what it is that causes plagiarism to be a problem. Originally, I thought that as long as I had a bibliography, nothing could be considered plagiarism. I now know that I have to specifically show when something is not of my own intelligence. It makes it much easier to avoid plagiarism, and also to make sure you keep the essay in your own voice. This came in handy for my other classes that involved writing essays, such as my World Religions class. In that class, I am very often using other sources for my information. If I hadn’t learned how to cite correctly I could have lost many points. I also learned how to write with more detail through the explications we had to do. Originally, I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t reaching my drafts length requirements, and why my partners and Ms. Goch were telling me to expand a paragraph. But after many drafts I understood that it was because I was being very vague in my writing. I can’t remember what it was, but something then sparked, and I noticed that I was not going into as much detail as I should have been. I realized that really had to go into detail for each line in the poems. I just thought my teachers had always been exaggerating when they said to go into such detail. Now, I know that not only does talking about why specific words were used in a poem, or how the syntax an author used would affect a poem, but I realized that it helped me reach the length requirements I needed for my essays. This class has definitely impacted me. I know realize things that will help my poetry be better, but I have also learned much about how artistic the people around me can be.
